Mahogany Jones LIVE, a Detroit-area hip-hop/soul group are on their way to Africa, after her group won a U.S. State Department contest to become one of 12 U.S. musical ambassadors sent abroad.
The State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsor of the American Music Abroad Program, received 300 applicants.
The first leg of the trip will have the group preforming in Washington, D.C., to perform for the Duke Ellington High School for the Arts before leaving for Zambia. The group will also perform at events in Rwanda, Uganda, Botswana and Ethiopia in addition to workshops about hip hop for local musicians and youth.
You can usually find Mahogany Jones, whose legal name is Charyse Bailey performing at the Old Miami Bar in Midtown, where she hosts a program featuring women in hip hop.
