Afghanistan’s First Female Rapper
Afghanistan’s first female rapper Sosan Firooz, sings about the oppression of women, and misery she says she endured as a small child living in neighboring Iran. She is creating a buzz with her raps, but not yet widely known among Afghans. Traditional rules for women in a very conservative society, where women are not allowed go outside without wearing blue burqas that cover them from head to toe. Brutality against women is still common practice in Afghanistan, especially in remote areas.
Firooz, is breaking tradition, rapping for change and empowering not only women but other Afghans.
Rap and hip-hop are just starting to gain popularity in Afghanistan, particularly among the youth. There are a few male rappers, including 28-year-old Bejan Zafarmal, nicknamed D.J. Besho.
